Student Life

The National Art Honor Society was established in 1978 in the United States by the National Art Education Association for high school students grades 9-12. National Art Honor Society gives students a chance to take their creativity beyond the classroom. Members can grow as artists, connect with other students who share a passion for the arts, contribute their talents to the school and community, and build leadership and service experience along the way. To qualify for the National Art Honor Society you must meet the following qualifications:

• 90 or higher in Art Classes.
• Grade 9-12 with 1 year of credit in Art.
• 2 teacher recommendations are necessary.
• 8 hours of arts related community service to be accepted.
• Must maintain a “B” average in other subject areas.
• No ISS or OSS.

The National Honor Society was established in the year 1921. More than just the average Honor Roll, the National Honor Society serves to honor those high school students who have shown excellence in the areas of Scholarship, Leadership, Service, and Character. Students that maintain a 3.5 or higher GPA will receive an invitation to apply during their junior year of high school. Students that maintain a 3.5 or higher GPA will receive an invitation to apply during their junior year of high school. Students that are accepted into NHS are required to maintain a 3.5+ GPA and complete annual community service requirements.

The Spanish National Honor Society (also called the Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica) recognizes high school students who demonstrate academic achievement in Spanish while encouraging a deeper appreciation of Spanish language and Hispanic cultures. Students must be in 10^th grade or higher, have completed at least three semesters of Spanish, and maintain the academic standards established by the Sturgis High School chapter. Members have opportunities to put their language skills into practice and experience Spanish culture beyond their coursework. The group meets once a month at a local restaurant, where students learn more about Spanish culture while practicing conversational Spanish together.

Quiz Bowl Club is an activity open to any Sturgis High School student interested in competitive trivia games. The club meets weekly, starting in October, and offers students in grades 9-12 the opportunity to compete against other trivia enthusiasts in buzzer-round competitions on a wide range of academic topics. Each year, the club sends a team to the St. Joseph County Quiz Bowl competition at the SJCISD in Centreville, MI.

Interested students should listen to SHS announcements for club meeting dates/times, contact the Main Office to learn more. 

Peer Assistance is a group of sophomores, juniors, and seniors who have been selected through a recommendation process. These students are available on an appointment basis to listen, not advise, on problems students may be having in and out of school. Their motto is, "helping others help themselves." The group also participates in many service projects throughout the year, provides tutoring to struggling students, gives new student tours, and works with Foreign Exchange students to welcome them to the high school.

Positive School Culture is a student organization that tries to think of new ways to brighten the day for the students at Sturgis High School. 

Activities of the group all depends on the creativity and the drive of students like you. Some things the club has done over the years include: Birthday recognition, bulletin boards and posters around the school, positive locker notes, music during passing time, and they beautified up the various courtyards around the school.
